This Must Be A Dream... The 1975 Round 2

How do you describe a band that is indescribable? How do you find the words to describe your experience and give a reader insight to what you saw and felt from an artist who you just saw perform on stage? I am at a loss for words on how I can possibly do this. Every artist I see is different. They all bring an individual touch to the stage which is usually what makes it so difficult for me to choose what my favorite concert has been. Whenever you see the same artist performing a new tour, there is an element about them that usually remains stable, at least that is what I have experienced. I am lost because The 1975 gave me an entirely new experience. I am definitely somewhere that is not here right now. My ears are ringing, adrenaline is pumping, heart is racing, and feelings are overflowing. I have so much to say and no clue where to start. Two years. Exactly two years and one day later, I got to see The 1975 live again. Never did I ever think I would be seeing them once, much less twice (and hopefully many more times).

Let me begin with the opening act; 070 Shake was fire. She was all about motivation, staying true to yourself, and not letting anyone/anything getting to you and knocking you down. Her most well known song is "Trust Nobody" which along with the rest of her songs performed, was absolutely solid. I will admit that it may not be necessarily my taste in music, but I feel that simply justifies what I am trying to say. She worked on constantly trying to push and motivate her audience, both to get you involved in her music and in life. Just a year ago, she was in the audience, awaiting anxiously for her favorite artist to appear on stage and have the time of her life and now she gets to be that artist. She has chosen to use this outlet to make a change and will very clearly not shy away from it. I highly recommend her to anyone who just wants to have a solid jam session or wants to find a deeper meaning. Her music definitely satisfies both.

Now on to an unforgettable experience:

The 1975 plays music I never really know how to describe to begin with. It is so unique to them and who they are as a band, that trying to define them really does not feel right. It might be cheesy and sound slightly angst-y, but they are not a group that really comes with a label. Whenever someone asks me what kind of music they play, I always say they are "British... Indie... Rock... Pop-y-ish..." and then leave it at that. Suddenly, right before this concert began, I finally found the word. Eclectic. That is exactly how I would describe them. I do not define them in the sense of genre, but their wide range of influences definitely pile up, allowing them to bring in a new sound that is The 1975 and nobody else. With a very heavy 80's influence, they are one of a kind in our generation and are bringing changes to the current music scene. They're most known for their song "Chocolate," but I highly recommend checking out all of their stuff to get a feel on whether or not you will like them or not.

This concert was such a different experience compared to the first time I saw them. I have seen many artists live more than once, watching how they have grown from one tour to another, but these guys definitely surprised me big time. Don't get me wrong, I loved them both times around, but this second show presented me with insight on how they have grown. Not only is there a difference in sound, but there is a difference in image (from the black and white to now pink and white with the touch of flowers), performance, stage presence, audience interaction, and simply in who they are as individuals. Their maturity level has increased by so much and in no way failed to remain true to themselves. I guess in the simplest words I can find, they grew within themselves. They allowed their music to come from their changes as people, as opposed to changing based on their music. Their growth is by them, for them, at their pace, in their time.

The biggest change that appeared to me was from Matty. Matthew Healy is the lead singer of this group who completely changed my perspective on people. I don't want to dwell too deeply on how he changed my personal views, but I do want to say that his growth, his experiences, who he has set himself on the path to be, have strengthened him as both an artist and a person. This allowed him to present one phenomenal concert experience and make it more enjoyable than ever before.

The beauty of going from their first album, The 1975, to their second album I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, is how easy it is to follow along their journey. It's a story and the first album was simply the first chapter, leading into the second one. There are many references from the first album done in the second album and they did not fail to make this statement in the set up of their songs. The set-list of the show helped outline this beautifully. Maybe all of this was not their intention, but what I picked up from it was how despite their growth (the new songs), it is not uncommon to fall back (playing older songs in between the ones they specifically related to). As is life, when we all sometimes take a couple of steps back, but can always work on taking three steps forward.

Their performance was wild, in the best way possible. It was incredibly artistic, full of beautiful background visuals that brought their songs more depth, really pulling you in and giving the audience members more of an insight to what the song is and what the band wants it to come across as. They have specific songs that are very heavy instrumentally which were used as transitions toward the other half of their set-list and I do not think it could have been a more perfect set up.

My absolute favorite song of the night was when they played "The Sound" which was definitely the most solid ending to any concert I have ever attended.  Talk about a cheesy "fans jumping up and down in the pit while looking up at their favorite artist, feeling like the only moment that matters is right here, right now, and the world could start crashing down outside but no one will notice" kind of moment. Super cinematic, edgy, fun, upbeat, and so unbelievably enjoyable. The energy and the rush that it provided was enough to elevate the crowd and create this amazing sense of "oneness." It was an incredibly strong part of their audience interaction and my favorite bit of any concert I have ever been to.

I have so much more I can possibly say, but I am overwhelmed with so much emotion and here I am, a week later and I am still struggling with putting words to my experience. I am thankful for it. More thankful than I could let the world know. Yet here I am, attempting to put words to this. Instead, I'll post some pictures below and hopefully I could bring some part of my experience to your everyday life.

Musical Diary

Music tells stories. It documents things. Who you are, where you've been, what you've seen and how you've felt, all through any given moment in time. Music can connect you to a moment, or a person. Music can create and store friendships. It can bring back all kinds of memories. Ever had a moment where you heard a song you haven't listened to since you were a kid? Then suddenly *BOOM* hardcore nostalgia. Memories flood back to you. Things you didn't even realize were actually little puzzle pieces leading up to the person you are right now. I don't know about you, but when that feeling of nostalgia hits me, I feel so thankful. I'm thankful because music is there to remind you that there were many things you had to go through to be where you are now, and it's a part of the journey you're taking in the future. It can create a timeline for your life.

Personally, music has always been significant in my life. I grew up listening to absolutely everything. From old school classic rock to pop, stuff in both Arabic & Spanish, musicals, classical music, you name it and there's an 89.9999% chance that I grew up listening to it. Every single thing I have listened to, has been significant at any given moment of my life. These are moments distinctly marked by a song. For example, "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey will forever be the camp song for me. I will also never forget waking up in the middle of the night when I was little to having a mariachi band in my grandparent's living room in Mexico City playing "Canta Canta Canta" by Jose Alfredo Jimenez. My grandfather use to always say "No es fiesta si no hay mariachi" (it's not a party if there isn't a mariachi band). Music has changed my life, as it has for many. It ignites a fire in me that no one can put out, nor do I want anyone to.

I have realized recently that a lot of my favorite artists are my favorite artists because of their stories that led to using music as their outlet. The passion that they themselves felt through their favorite artists have driven them to create the same passion in someone like me. There have been moments in history changed and defined by music. Music has connected people and created bonds that truly last a lifetime. I have even been to shows related to The Beatles and seen how it brings generations closer together. Music speaks volumes. Music is a reminder that you are definitely not alone, and that someone somewhere feels just as you do. Whether it be expressed through words, bass drops, or guitar riffs, there's a movement that only seems to be getting stronger. Music has been the outlet people needed to express themselves. There's a domino effect tied into it all, a connection you can't break. It's the feeling, the adrenaline, the love, the passion. Music is in every word you speak, poem that's recited, sound you hear and letter you write.

I've made a new friend recently who has opened both my normal eyes and my music eyes to a whole new kind of musical world. It was while talking to him, the inspiration for this post came about (shout-out to him & to that moment when inspiration strikes). I'm very open to learning and listening to all kinds of music because you never know what it will do to you. My junior year of college will definitely be remembered as the year electronic dance music came into my life. I know that years from now, even if he's not in my life anymore, whenever I listen to Eric Prydz, I'll be reminded of my friend. That makes me happy now and I know the memory of this will also make me happy later. It makes me happy because I know that through this music, I'll always have this current moment in time, reminding me of such a phenomenal person and reminding me of the kind of person/friend I want to be toward others. This has happened with many people who have been in my life. Whether it was from music they introduced to me or having a "best friend song" in middle school, or simply a song you would always jam to with someone during a road trip. It has a way of storing memories I have never experienced through anything else.

I am a writer. Music is my diary. Music holds my memories, my feelings, my thoughts and my passion. Music helps me define who I am as a person, as I believe it does for many. Music has the ability to give the world a lot of the love we neglect to give and receive from one another. I know many don't understand, or will care to understand where I am coming from, but because of who I am as a person, who music has helped me become, I choose to voice it regardless. I choose to express myself as the writer I am, as the artist that music has taught me to be. This is my diary, my voice, and my expression. My music, my words, my memories, are me.

Favorite Songs

Yay for being out of hiatus! I haven't written since back in May when I went to go see DVICIO and I really miss posting on here. I have not had the chance to go to a concert (huge bummer) but I still want to write. I've decided I'm going to post about my favorite songs, or songs that give me all the feels. I'm also completely procrastinating studying right now because I'm way too inspired to take notes over the cultural history of the media (brb falling asleep just thinking about it). Naturally, it's time for a brain break!

There are a lot of songs I am a huge fan of, but not all of them will make it on to this list. I have yet to decide if I want to add or take away at any given point but as of right now, on September 14, 2016, these songs are the ones I could listen to on repeat and never get tired of.

1. Incomplete - James Bay
Okay let me start off my saying James Bay is my favorite solo artist and there will be at least one other song by him on this list. Also, his album "Chaos and the Calm" is my favorite album of 2015/most of 2016 so no surprise there. This song gives me all the feels. Seriously, wow. The way it's written, the transitions throughout the song are incredibly smooth, his voice is so soothing and I don't know what it is about him but he just always knows how to just get me in the right place. His harmonies are subtle and beautiful. I also really love that there is a very easy transition you can take with this song by playing it on an acoustic guitar. It's the kind of song that sounds beautiful both with all the instruments and by just using one.

2. Hold Back the River - James Bay
Oh lookie here, James Bay again! This song holds so much meaning. Both as how he intended to write it and to myself. Throughout the past month and a half it has just increased in significance for me. Recently, a family member of mine passed away and along with this event, this song has really opened my eyes to enjoying the present moment. "Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes, hold back the river so I, can stop for a minute be by your side." Stop. Step back, Take a minute. Soak it in. The people you're with, Where you are. Enjoy it, all of it. There's a beauty to the love that surrounds you on a day to day basis. It's a love that we need to stop and really look at. It's the strongest love I know.

3. I'm Yours - Jason Mraz
CLASSIC. Seriously. I know not classic in a "Frank Sinatra" kind of way, but classic in a "I have been listening to this song repeatedly since it was first released and I still am not tired of it." It is such a cute song!!!!!!!!! Seriously! It is so casual, it flows so beautifully and the meaning is so great. It is carefree and not carefree in a bad way, but carefree in a "let's just enjoy life please." My favorite song lyric also comes from this song and it definitely has words to live by. 10/10 Valerie recommend.

4.  Fathoms Below  - The Little Mermaid
Oh yeah, I did just go hardcore Disney. Bet most people reading this are going "which song is that?" Well let me answer your question. This song is actually the first song to play in the movie. I love it for for many reasons but overall it's so majestic. Seriously. The orchestra behind the song absolutely blows my mind! From the string, to the wind to the percussion instruments. The way all the instruments work together just makes me so happy!!!!

5. Tenerife Sea - Ed Sheeran
Y'all, this song is crazy underrated. It's SO beautiful. I'm talking beautiful to the point it makes me wish I was the girl the song was written about. I get butterflies when I listen to it. Not to mention when he sang it live, I got chills (in the September, at an open arena, in Houston, meaning let's process how amazing he is live). I don't know why he got blessed with the talent he has been given, but I thank God he has been able to share it with the world as he has.

6. Truly, Madly, Deeply - One Direction
Who knew this boyband could have such a heartfelt song apart from Little Things, right? Seriously, another crazy underrated song. It just makes me all mushy. I love it.

7. I've Just Seen A Face - The Beatles (the version of Across the Universe)
Such a catchy song, such a cute song. It talks about having just seen the face of a girl and she suddenly catches your attention. I guess it follows the lines of "love at first sight" but it's so catchy. It sets vibes for an upbeat day.

8. Spirits - The Strumbellas
Honestly, I'm just really digging this song right now. It's such a chill song to listen to, especially while studying.

9. Sweet Louise - The Belle Brigade
It's so SWEET. Seriously, SO. SWEET. Go listen to it. Now. Please. Thank you.

10. Closer - The Chainsmokers (ft. Halsey)
Okay last one for this first post. I'm obsessed. It's catchy. I love the chorus. It's great. That's all.

Now I've procrastinated enough and it's time for me to go to bed! I hope you enjoy what I enjoy, if not then I would love to take suggestions on more music! But for now, I say goodnight. Sleep with the angels, everyone!

DVICIO(OOOOO)

Hello lovely readers! I know it's been a while since I've posted but sadly I haven't had much of a chance to attend any concerts since James Bay, but nonetheless, I'm back! This past Saturday, May 21st, I got a chance to see a band from Spain named DVICIO play at The Domain in Austin, Texas! Here's how it allllll went down:

DVICIO is a band that originates out of Madrid, Spain and consists of five members: Andrés (vocals), Martín (bass), Nacho (guitar), Luis (drums) & Alberto (guitar). These five boys came together as a group in 2013 but go way further back as they were all childhood friends as well as Martín & Andrés actually being brothers! Their debut album is titled “Justo Ahora y Siempre” which includes their singles “Enamorate,” “Paraiso,” and their most recent single, “Nada.”

To begin, I discovered DVICIO back in early October 2015 when this video for their song "Enamorate" appeared on my Facebook feed. They then came to Houston mid-October but because I go to school in College Station, Texas, I couldn't leave school to go see them. Fast-forward to about a couple of weeks ago, the band announced they would be in Austin on the same day I had already planned on going with friends to hike that morning. Who would have thought that out of all days they would be in Texas, they'd be in the same city as I would be in? To top that, it was my first time in Austin! So of course I took the opportunity and got to see the band perform followed by the chance to meet them (twice considering I met them in Houston the evening before, shout-out to Malenie for making me go)!

To get to meet the guys, you had to simply buy a CD, then you’d get a wristband and after the show you got to meet them! They played: Enamorate, Paraiso, Nada, a cover of Counting Stars by One Republic and Justo Ahora. It was a very short performance but I was far from being disappointed. These guys know how to interact with their audience. It was mind-blowing. I have been to many concerts and no one I have ever seen has been able to connect with the people with only a few years of experience under their belt. On top of that, their passion for their songs and the music is there, and there’s no possible way you can miss it unless you’re really trying to not pay attention.

I absolutely love seeing bands live and hearing songs that I have learned by heart being played in front of me. What I feel makes a concert special is seeing how the band/artist may interpret their own songs on stage. Everyone has their own way of understanding a song, but my favorite thing is to see how the artist themselves play the song, how they want it to be interpreted. It’s as if you’re going to the core of who they are, or of an event that impacted them, yet somehow you found a way to relate to, whether you simply find the song catchy or find it at a personal level. This band is very talented and I knew I had to take advantage of my opportunities to meet them since I have no doubt they’ll eventually blow up. The songs are real, it's all genuine and you can tell from how they play each and every song how every single one of the members themselves connect to it differently. They are a strong bridge between their audience and the music which leads to a very good show. I am still processing and I am extremely lucky that I got to live it.

Meeting them was such a crazy experience! A girl from Texas discovers a band from Spain and suddenly the opportunity to meet them presents itself. NEVER did I think I would meet them when I first discovered them, then lo and behold seven months later I met them twice within a 24 hour time frame. These boys are so sweet! They’re tall, smell nice and have dazzling smiles (thought this might be important). Apart from that, you can tell they’re very chill and down-to-earth guys who are involved in what they’re doing from a genuine love for it. It was a really nice experience and I feel very blessed I got to go through it twice. They care for their fans and it's incredible to see it behind the scenes. They even let my friend come back at the end to get a shirt signed when they didn’t get a chance to earlier at the actual signing (did I mention it was a photo-op and a CD signing? Whoops). After all of that (oh yeah, there’s more), I got a selfie with Martin (s’cute) and we got to say goodbye to them when they left! This is a well rounded group of men who have their morals in check and a strong head on their shoulders. Their hearts are shown through their music and by meeting them I felt I was meeting a song, I was meeting people who pour their hearts out on something that could very well change the world if they have the incentive to (right when you thought I couldn't be any cheesier).

I have a chance to see them again in Mexico City while I’m there this summer (I swear all of this just happens to be a coincidence) and I really hope I get to! I’d love to see them in a full on venue and performing more of their songs. Down below are some pictures of yesterday and the link to their YouTube channel! I definitely recommend checking them out, even if you don’t speak Spanish. They have some of their songs in English for those of you who want to hear it that way instead. Anyway, I suppose I’ll let go here and let you explore the band for yourself! Have a wonderful morning/afternoon/evening wherever you are in the world! :)

DVICIO,

BAYwatchin' James Ba(e)y

I have never, and I mean genuinely never been so excited to be able to write about a concert experience. I love all the concerts I attend, but this one had a vibe I have never felt before, a kind of vibe you rarely every get which makes me want to write this post at 12:58 AM on November 25, 2015.

Last night I had the incredible opportunity to go see James Bay at the House of Blues in Houston, TX. The night was full of so many incredible (and very interesting) moments which absolutely led to having an unforgettable evening.

The concert began with an opening performance by Cloves. Cloves is from Melbourne, Australia and performed about six songs, all which gave very chill and soothing vibes. She has a very strong and mellow voice which set a great undertone for James Bay's following performance. The song "Don't You Wait" is most definitely worth the listen and check her out if you get a chance to! It's worthwhile.

James Bay is a 25 year old singer/songwriter from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, in the UK. He has four EP's out and an album titled Chaos and the Calm. Bay 's first single was the song "Let It Go," which has been featured on many shows such as Jane the Virgin, and Grey's Anatomy. Following "Let It Go," Bay released his second single titled "Hold Back the River" (a personal favorite), and absolutely smashed it. Currently he is touring across the U.S. and if you have a chance to go see him, please do! He is absolutely wonderful and delivers such a chill, strong and beautiful performance. The first time I ever heard James Bay, I was watching Jane the Virgin and there was a scene between Jane and Michael where Michael takes out his phone and plays "Let It Go," which instantly caught my interest and from there it was all sparks that ignited a very strong admiration from then on.

Wow. Honestly, all I can say is wow. I am at a loss for words at the show I just attended. Never did I think that I would ever see James Bay live, never did I think I would be as close to the stage as I was, never did I think that he would make eye contact with me (maybe that part was in my head but a girl can dream). James Bay brought to the stage a combination of many elements I never expected to be so strongly rendered through a performance. He has an incredibly large amount of humility, passion, and love for the music. Most importantly, the way he connects with each and every song was something I did not expect at all (in the best way possible, seriously I have never witnessed an artist connect so personally with his songs on stage) and very easily became my favorite part of the show. I was absolutely mesmerized by the way he would simply play a few chords on his guitar, close his eyes and suddenly vibe with the music so well that just by watching him, you get zoned in. All of this led to my favorite moment of the night being when James played the song "Scars" and made the whole venue go quiet. All he did was start playing and he silenced every person in the room. Without asking. Who does that? I was blown away at his raw talent.

His humility overwhelmed me. The way it ties into his passion and love for music is the strongest aspect of the performance. You can tell James doesn't perform to try and show off, or to try and make himself more popular, he performs because he loves it and it is so clear while he is on stage. Bay's success has come from his genuine love for the music, it's beautiful to see that he does not have to force his performance. He connects to his songs on such a strong level and pours all he has into them. My favorite song he performed had to be"Incomplete" (not just because it is my absolute favorite song by him which I have listened on repeat for over a month now and am still obsessed with). I could not help but be mesmerized at everything he was doing, it was very hard to look away when someone clearly expresses such a strong passion for what they are doing. My favorite thing he would do is close his eyes whenever he would sing. It would not be for the whole song but it was the right amount where you are reminded to focus on the music, not on him. After all, it is the music that brings you to the show.

If you ever ask me what is something I absolutely love about people, I will tell you I love it when someone gets so passionate about something that their eyes light up, they carry a sort of confidence about it in their body language and are genuinely so happy. James Bay took all the passion he had and it has reflected through to his work. Honestly I'm blown away. I loved watching him completely own every song, be passionate about it, about the music more than anything. If I thought I loved this artist before then I have grown to love his music even more (I was unaware this was even possible). I have seen approximately twenty live performances and he has definitely made it to my top three along with Ed Sheeran and The 1975. He brought something to the playing field that has made me so excited to watch him grow (because I definitely plan on seeing him again).

Ed, Ceeps & Jamie (9/3/2015)

This past Thursday, I had the incredible blessing of going to see Ed Sheeran at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas and sat no more than twelve rows away from the stage. Anyone who has known me for at least the last four years, knows how heartbroken I was when I missed seeing him at the Bayou Music Center (now Revention) on January 17, 2013 and when I missed him opening for Taylor Swift in May of the same year. Considering Ed is my favorite male solo artist (tied with Jason Mraz), this was most definitely a dream come true for me.

To start things off, Ed had two opening acts, Christina Perri (who I was now seeing the second time around), and Jamie Lawson who is the first ever artist to be signed on to Ed's recording label, Gingerbread Records. Jamie has a single called "Wasn't Expecting That" and let's just say I really wasn't expecting to love his music as much as I do now. This was Jamie's first ever U.S. performance and he absolutely killed it. He has a very charming personality that allowed for a comfortable audience interaction which can be quite difficult with an artist who is just up and coming and not known very well but he very easily had everyone participating, cheering and singing along. Shoutout to Jamie for doing such a wonderful job, he's definitely an artist to watch!

After Jamie came the absolutely lovely Chirstina Perri. Ceeps is known for having songs such as "Jar of Hearts" and the beautiful "A Thousand Years," which first made its debut in the final Twilight Saga movie. I had the pleasure of seeing Christina last year on May 6th at the House of Blues and had as much of a blast now as much as I did then. The way she presents herself is just so fun. When an artist enjoys themselves and the music it is very clear to the audience and it makes the music much more appealing to listen to and Ceeps does that exactly. She has so much fun on stage that it makes you want to run up with her and just dance with her as she sings. Her songs carry so much meaning behind them that it becomes very easy to relate to many of her experiences. The 29-year-old blew my mind once again and left me in awe as she performed all these songs I got the opportunity to hear for the second time. Her stage presence grew, her love grew, her passion grew and her voice (if at all possible), grew so much more from when I previously saw her almost a year and a half ago. I will always be a fan of Christina Perri and her music, I can only hope I will have the opportunity to keep attending her shows whenever she comes to town and to watch her grow as both a person and an artist.

Last but not least, Ed Sheeran dominated the stage. For those who don't really know Ed, he's known for having composed and recorded songs such as "The A Team" and "Thinking Out Loud." If I could pinpoint the emotions coursing through me throughout his performance then I would but in all honesty I was so amazed that the whole moment felt completely unreal. Ed played a two hour long set with a good mix of his new songs and some of his older songs, along with some oldies by Stevie Wonder and Blackstreet mashed up with his music. The most incredible part of the whole show, and without a doubt my most favorite, is that on that stage it is just Ed Sheeran and a guitar. It's raw. It's genuine. It's in the moment and it's real. There is no faking it because you can't, and that's what made this particular concert my favorite one (keep in mind I have been to many), and I am almost positive it will always be my favorite.

The stage was set up with five huge panels and then a smaller elevated stage on the actual stage. Every song played had a graphic on the screen that related to the song Ed was playing, whether it was "Tenerife Sea" or "Bloodstream," each one stayed unique to each song. The audience was a good mix of young, old and everything in between, every person enjoying the music as much as the next. Out of all the songs that Ed performed, my favorite ones were definitely "Tenerife Sea" and "One" (which I haven't stopped playing if I'm quite honest). The emotion behind those two songs specifically sparks up my curiosity but makes me understand so much. Out of every artist/band I have ever listened to, I have never wanted to meet the songwriter behind the music and want to sit down with them to talk about what inspired them and just get to know them so much in my life before.

Music is my second love, it has always been a key point about me and the passion I have for it is something that drives me to live my life the way that I do. Ed Sheeran is one of those artists that inspires me to keep pushing through and keep believing in myself. No more than five to six years ago he was couch surfing and homeless, working on his music, performing and sharing his music and slowly growing into the artist he is becoming. I will always love his early stuff, and I mean the EP's and album "+," the most because he never gave up. Those songs helped him grow and learn, they brought him to where he is now, starting from the ground and working his way up. His ability to stick true to his dreams has always made me admire him more than I could ever explain. My love for music stems with my love for literature and I have a passion for both that makes me curious as to where it will take me in life. Ed inspires me to write this blog post and share it with the world. He has inspired me to keep growing and never give up. Hard work pays off and things will take the course they are meant to follow. Ed Sheeran, Christina Perri and Jamie Lawson are definitely all artists to listen to.

Dan+Shay (3/13/2015)

Last Friday night I got the chance to go and see Dan+Shay and their opening act Canaan Smith live at the House of Blues in Houston, TX. I wasn't originally planning on going to the concert due to a very few amount of my friends actually knowing who they were and not having anyone to go with, but a couple of days before the concert, I entered a contest through Live Nation just because and ended up winning tickets to the concert! I only had three hours until the box office opened when I found out but I was fortunate enough to find someone to go with and ended up having a incredible night.  Both performances were absolutely incredible. The performers gave off amazing energy and were really good at interacting with the audience. They  had me dancing and enjoying myself, reminding me why I love music so much and on the impact it has made on my life while making a few new friends along the way who constantly remind me to keep that fire alive!

For those of you who have no clue who they are, Dan+Shay are a country duo and are most well known for their song "19+You and Me" and their most recent single, "Nothin' Like You." Although Dan+Shay aren't super well known, I have been listening to them since "19+ You and Me" first came out on the radio and I fell in love with their album "Where It All Began." Canaan Smith is also an up-and-coming artist who has been opening for Dan+Shay on tour and is most well known for his single "Love You Like That."

Although I didn't really know who Canaan Smith was before the concert started, his music and energy were able to set a vibe that allowed the audience to really feel the music. He has a great voice and has a really strong level of interaction with his audience. Canaan's songs such as "Bronco" had a way of really moving people and making you really feel what he's feeling throughout his performance. Luckily at the end of his performance, I also got to meet his bassist and take a very cute picture with him (he's such a lovely guy, check out his band Cardfall on Youtube and Twitter).

Dan+Shay have been personal favorites of mine for quite a while now. When I first listened to the whole of their "Where It All Began" album, I fell head over heels for their music. Considering most of their songs are very mellow and cutesy-romantic, they performed every song from the heart and carried an energy throughout the whole show I'm sure not many people would have been able to create. This was the first concert I had ever been to where I didn't prepare (because I didn't know I was gong beforehand) and didn't worry about because I already knew all their songs by heart. Apart from being irresistible cuties, when it came to their stage presence, I was absolutely blown away. These guys haven't been touring as long as many of the other bands I have seen live (I've seen many) and the energy they had, making the audience feel like they are a part of the performance itself, was truly impressive. Their voices are beautiful live and they have a way of making you forget there's an outside world to begin with. I know some people reading this may think I'm just being extremely biased (maybe slightly, not extremely), but I have been to many concerts and I get that being in a more intimate location such as the House of Blues helps when it comes to audience interaction, but I have no doubt in my mind that they are just as incredible with a larger audience. They hit every note flawlessly and nailed all their harmonies, carrying so much feeling in their performance. For two guys who are headlining their first tour, they did an incredible job on stage. I honestly give them a 10/10 to listen to and to see live. If I could, I would repeat that night over and over again. Then to top it all off, they are extremely sweet and funny!

Every time I think of that night, I get excited all over again. I have no doubt God threw me a helping hand, knowing that not only was I missing concerts, but that I was going to be meeting incredible people who happen to attend school in same college town I'm in and who slowly but surely have been making an wonderful impact in my life. That night remains alive in me and will continue to stay that way for as long as I can make it last. If there's one thing that I have learned (or at least been reassured of) is music can bring people together, change the world and be the helping hand some people desperately need in their lives. Thank God for music and the beauty it can bring into our lives. It's an impact I wouldn't exchange for anything else in the world.

Here are a few pictures from the concert:

British Babe

The first time I ever heard a song by James Bay, it was on CW's show "Jane the Virgin" as Jane and Michael had reconciled their relationship and Michael played the song "Let it Go" (No, not the song from Frozen, obviously). From there on, I became obsessed with the song and I tend to catch myself singing the chorus more often than not.

James Bay is a British song-writer and guitarist from Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Bay has 3 EPs, "The Dark of the Morning," "Let it Go," and "Hold Back the River." In 2014 when having released his EP "Let it Go," the song "Let it Go" debuted on the Top 10 iTunes Chart in the UK. Since then he has been climbing his way up in the music industry. Bay also recently won the BRIT Critic's Choice Award earlier this week.

Bay's music has a very down to earth kind of vibe to it. His voice is very soulful and smooth and his music is very stripped back. He definitely falls under Indie/Pop/Alternative Rock genre. Apart from "Let it Go," his song "Need the Sun to Break" has definitely been really touching. The songs he writes are all very guitar based and carry a very natural feel to them.

Maybe it's my love for Indie and Acoustic Rock music that brings me to writing about James Bay, but I believe he's about to make a major impact on the music industry. He's someone that I feel needs to be out there. His music is so genuine and raw, it's so real. The emotions flow so well and you can hear it all in his voice. Bay's songs make me feel like each one has a story attached to it. Like I'm able to take the words and create a real event that might have led to the writing of the song, but the best part is that I imagine each song spurring from so many different possible events, they're each open for interpretation. It's like they all have a beautiful light shining on them, allowing you to admire and to find your own meaning behind each one.

Despite his beautiful, dark, long locks, Bay has a voice that can just make you really feel. I truly believe he deserves to keep moving on up, he's something new and something needed. I look forward to seeing what impact he may bring to the world of music.

"Music doesn't exist, physically. Yet it commands every facet of my personality and it has the power to command people how to feel on a physical level, uncontrollably. And I find that so fascinating.”

-Matthew Healy from The 1975

I have never come across a more accurate quote and I'm pretty sure he's my spirit animal. That is all.

The 1975

I have to say, out of all the concerts I have ever been to, going to see The 1975 on November 26, 2014 was without a doubt one of the best concerts I've ever attended and one of the best nights of my life.

The 1975 are a band from the city of Manchester in the UK consisting of four band members; Matthew (Matty) Healy is the lead singer, Adam Hann on guitar, Ross MacDonald on bass guitar and George Daniel on drums. They have been together since they formed in 2002 back when they were still in school and released their debut album "The 1975" on September 2, 2013.

Because music has meant so much to me in the past, it's been incredibly easy for me to say "Oh my gosh this band is incredible blah blah blah" but it's also really easy for me to shut down something I don't like. When I first listened to The 1975, I was very on edge about them. I wasn't sure if I really liked them or if they were just a band I was going to have on my iTunes but not really bother playing. After a few listens to their album, they began growing on me. Slowly but surely, I was hooked. I just knew I was going to have to see them live because one day they're going to be big.

They were different but even now I still can't pinpoint what it is that makes them so.. them. All I know is they make me feel. It is said that music is good when it can make you feel. Although not every type of music is going to appeal to every kind of person, music generally comes from feelings, and when those feelings are triggered, you just know it's good. The 1975 make me feel. I get butterflies in my stomach, they make my heart race. I feel like I'm on cloud 9. They have an effect on me that makes me feel silly, but makes me feel like it's all okay. The way Matty's voice just sounds extremely raw, the way the instruments play, falling together so smoothly, and the way the lyrics can make no sense but make so much sense, all at the same time.

The 1975 is a band that isn't anything but themselves. It's easy to hear a musician say "I'm in this for the music," and although I do believe it, to have it shown is something completely different. They show it. They show their love for the art. They're passionate and they don't hide it. Their concert was simple, yet beautiful.

They took a part of my heart with them on that stage, and I don't want it back.

Well

It's been a while. I nearly forgot this blog existed but I think it's time I pick up and start writing again.

It's been an insane year. So many things have happened. So many more concerts have happened. So much new music has been released. So many bands have toured. So many feelings have come up.

I've changed so much as a person, I'm not the same girl I was a year ago. But that same love for music prevails.

If I Lose Myself...

I've always told my friends about how much I love music and how much I wish to pursue a career in the music field but aren't capable due to lack of much needed experience and most colleges require to audition to get into their music program. Apart from lack of experience, music is possibly one of the hardest careers to get involved with and even more difficult to succeed. Lately, I've been struggling with the question that pretty much everyone suffers with, "What am I going to do with the rest of my life?" And to be honest, I have a feeling, but at the same time I have absolutely no clue.

For the past four years of high school, I've been a part of my school's theatre and it's what I've concentrated on since my freshman year. Funny enough, since my freshman year, I've been obsessed with the thought of a career in the music business, more specifically being a music producer/song writer. Performing is a dream, but that's something that would require many vocal lessons. You would figure that because of my involvement in theatre, I would be unbelievably comfortable with being on a stage but nope, being a technician seems to be my calling when it comes to the theatrical aspect of things. But being on a stage to do something like sing karaoke, or sing anything for fun in front of people and not be limited to any set emotions or feelings is one of the greatest rushes I've ever felt. It simply makes me happy. If you're enjoying yourself, there's many ways to get an audience involved as well.

I love it. I love being at a concert and seeing a band or artist perform and you can just tell that they love what they do. It's not easy, nothing is easy, but to be able to do what you love as your career like that is amazing. Being on that stage in front of thousands of people. If you close your eyes, all you hear are the screams of so many people just waiting for their idols to go on stage and once they do, you know. Oh you know. Then you see them, they're there and they're real. The music is playing, they're singing, you're singing your heart out and you feel the adrenaline. The beat of the drums is felt in your chest and you start to flow with the music. The lights go haywire and you're suddenly in a dream. You and your idol are in the same room and it's real. Suddenly the last song has finished playing and your voice is gone, you're a lot more tired than you thought and your ears are ringing. It's pure bliss. You've just seen your idol perform live, and you're incredibly happy. Imagine being on the other side. Being on the stage and making thousands feel as happy as you're feeling.

In most cases though, being in church on a Sunday morning and listening to those hymns being sung. There's nothing more beautiful than hearing the choir sing and harmonizing in specific Tones. My favorite time of year is always Holy Week. When Good Friday comes around and we get to sing Lamentations. Then there's not one morning I'm not listening and singing along to O Pure Virgin (my favorite hymn of all time), because I know that without it, I won't feel as at ease and that it has a way of reminding me why I'm here and that I have a purpose in this life.

Music has this way of making you feel certain ways and connecting you to others in such ways you never thought possible. I want this to be my life. I want to be able to make people feel how The Script or All Time Low make me feel. Music reminds you that you're not alone because that person you're listening to sing, happened to go through a similar situation and there are others who know how you feel. You're never alone. Music can make you feel a wide range of emotions and it's absolutely stunning. Music's a gift from God and has a way of bringing us even closer together as his children, whether you believe in him or not, he works in wondrous ways.

I think I've expressed my emotions enough, for now. I'll be back soon though. Hope you enjoyed :)

The Script...

Well I haven't posted on here in a while and I apologize to those who actually thought this was somewhat interesting or good (hey, if you like it then please let me know!). But I am back! Not sure for how long though...

 BUT

Today I have returned to talk about The Script who are this phenomenal Irish band that I think deserve a lot more credit than they are given because WOW they're great. To those of you who've never heard of The Script (have you lived under a rock?), the band consists of three members: Danny O'Donoghue (lead vocals & guitar), Mark Sheehan (lead guitar & vocals), and Glen Power (drums). The band formed in 2002 and since then have kicked butt with great instrumentals and lyrics. A couple of the band's biggest well known hits are "Breakeven" and "The Man Who Can't Be Moved." (Sound familiar yet?)

Lately, my older brother has rediscovered his obsession with The Script and that's led to me rediscovering mine. Car rides have consisted of blasting "If You See Kay," "Six Degrees of Separation," and "If You Could See Me Now" (along with many more), while singing at the top of our lungs and having people in the other cars stare at us (no shame). Throughout these very fun car rides, I've paid much more attention to the lyrics than usual and have realized just how much meaning every single one of their songs have.

Personally, the most powerful song I believe O'Donoghue has written so far is "If You Could See Me Now" from the band's third album, #3. The song relates to the death of his father who passed away from a stomach aneurysm on February 14, 2008. Though the reason for the song is tragic, the emotion behind the song hits you as soon as the lyrics begin to flow. It is very easy to tell how he's feeling as he's singing and how much feeling has been put into this. It's not easy to write such a song, but I do commend him on being able to do it. Everyone should listen to the song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SGlkwKA-t_4

Another song that should be listened to, is "Give the Love Around" which is also from the album #3. The song speaks of what goes around comes around and how we should give the love around because it'll spread and come back to you. Our grandparents taught our parents, our parents taught us and we will be teaching our children as well as those who look up to us. If we love others, they will learn to love others as well. As much as we may be the future generation, we are also teaching those who are going to be taking over when we're stepping down. Definitely an A+ song, listen to it!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKPyxkYfBV0

Now it's time to wrap up another one of my"This Band Is So Amazing Go and Listen To Them I Promise You Won't Regret It" posts. Seriously though, I promise you won't regret listening to them. Great instrumentals, lyrics, voices and genuine feelings with each song. But for now, adios! :)

:)

P.S. Just in case you couldn't tell, I love them, a lot and yeah.

The Ginger with the Voice of an Angel

Let me start off with: Wow, I'm absolutely horrible and I suck at posting on time and I'm so sorry for neglecting you. Now I'm going to begin with one of my favorite topics:

Ed. Sheeran.

If you told me to describe how much I love Ed Sheeran and his music, it would pretty much be impossible. Anyone that has ever listened to all of his songs, or at least any other song apart from "A Team" can agree with me when I say that he's just so raw, unique, talented and WOW that voice.

When I first heard of Ed Sheeran, I was a sophomore in high school and it was around November/December of 2011. Needless to say I became addicted. I instantly got all of his songs after I listened to "Give Me Love" for the very first time and they were played all day everyday for a good month or so. Whenever I attempted to describe his music to someone, it became more of a "I can't use my words so I'm going to just try and use body language and throw my arms up in the air so you get what I'm trying to say" kind of thing. Around this time period no one really new who he has, therefore no one was going to really give him a chance.

As the school year went on, he was still pretty unknown to people. Then eventually about a year later, "A Team" was beginning to play on the radio. People began listening to him everywhere. I would say the only thing that bothered me about this was that they would only listen to "A Team," they would not give any of his other songs a chance. I mean yes it's a good song, but it just does not compare to "Give Me Love," "Kiss Me," "Firefly," and more. His talent his pretty close to being unmatched. The closest person I can think of with talent like his would be Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic.

I don't necessarily hate that he's become so big (and is still becoming bigger), but I do find it quite ironic that all the people who told me I was crazy two years ago (I'm a Senior now), are the ones posting Facebook statuses about how amazing his music is. (As if I didn't already know).

My whole point of this is:
- Ed Sheeran is amazing
- Ed Sheeran's music is amazing
- Ed Sheeran is crazy talented
- Ed Sheeran has a voice that can melt anyone's heart (metaphorically, of course)
- Ed Sheeran writes amazing music
- Ed Sheeran's songs have meaning behind them
- Ed Sheeran writes from life experiences and even when he doesn't the songs are still fantastic
- Ed Sheeran is Ed Sheeran.

If you've never listened to Ed Sheeran before (or any of his other songs), you simply must. Stop reading right now and go listen to his debut album "+" on YouTube and I promise you'll fall in love. Well now X Factor USA is about to start so I'm going to leave while you go listen to the ginger who has the voice of an angel.

Musically Inclined (except not really)...

Music has become one of the most important things in my life. Throughout some of my darkest moments, it's one of the few things that has been able to keep me somewhat close to sanity (apart from God who means everything to me). I can't explain what music does, but between the bass, the drums, guitar, harmonies, melodies and just a whole song in general, I get lost. I truly lose myself.

I like to think I have diverse music taste. I listen to everything ranging from pop, country, musicals, classical, classic rock, alternative, indie, occasional rap (depending on the artist), mariachi, salsa, merengue, 70's, 80's, 90's, Disney songs, The Beatles (yes, I consider them their own genre), and just SO much more. Music is everywhere, there's absolutely no way you can ever avoid it. Everything has it's own rhythm, it's own beat, it's own sound.  I've always wanted to take each of these different sounds, put them together and see what I could take from them, see what harmonies I could create, a melody, make an actual song. Sadly, I feel as if my talents in that particular area aren't necessarily, well good. I highly believe music is a remedy within itself. It's a gift that some use wisely, and others abuse.

Despite how not very musically inclined I am, I've always had dreams of making music my life. What could be better than to pursue a career in what I love the most? My hopes haven't died, it's not something I plan on giving up. Somehow, someway, I'm going to make sure that whatever I end up doing somehow relates to, or is music. I'm pretty sure many others feel the same way, and I understand why. I don't care how impractical it may seem, why am I going to go into a career I don't enjoy? I'll succeed more in something I enjoy instead of something that will make every single day of my life full of misery.

I know music makes people happy, no matter what religion they are or if they don't have a religion at all. I want to make people happy. I want to be able to tell people they're not alone, they can be happy and they will be. Pain is only temporary, it might return but things may fall apart for better things to fall together. Patience is key. Music has helped me be patient. No matter how long I've had to wait something out, music has been the only thing that's stuck like glue, whether it be a church hymn such as O PureVirgin (my personal favorite) or What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction. Just be a bit patient, listen to some music. Things always get better. :)
(Sorry, I know this paragraph got a bit off topic.)

Midnight Memories

It's a well known fact to all of my friends that I'm a (very proud) One Direction fan and I have been for the past 2, nearly 3 years. Recently, the band released a new album called Midnight Memories. I'm sure it's needless to say I absolutely love every single song on the album, but I figured I should justify why this has been by far the best album the boys have released, in my opinion.

When One Direction released their debut album, Up All Night, they became famous worldwide as if overnight. Although I believe Up All Night to be a great album with songs like What Makes You Beautiful and One Thing (a personal favorite), none of the songs were written or even co-written by any of the boys. I expected this due to the band being fresh out of the UK's X Factor, but it wasn't until their second album, Take Me Home, that we began to get more of a feel for what the boys really wanted their music to sound like.

Take Me Home was a very upbeat album with a few emotional songs here and there. The boys began to take a hold of their music even more and slowly started growing as songwriters, experiencing different areas of music. I had the privilege to actually go to the Take Me Home tour in Houston, Texas where the boys performed about 95% of their songs from the Take Me Home album. The concert was pretty amazing, definitely one I will always remember and even tell my kids about. I had the best time of my life. The album made #1 on iTunes within the first day it was released and topped many charts. I highly believe it doesn't come close to being as good as Midnight Memories.

Midnight Memories has been the first album the boys have released where majority of the songs were written by the boys, take it they didn't write them alone, but the point is that they had full control of their music. If you were to take your time just listening to songs from each album in order (Up All Night, Take Me Home and then Midnight Memories), you will begin to realize how much their music begins to mature. I personally feel as if the boys have always tried to target an older audience (Ages 16+) but due to growing themselves, they've been able to hit a much wider range of fans. The boys are now kicking butt with an unbelievably strong fan base behind them and are growing in their music with a brand new phenomenal album. With songs like "Diana," "Story of my Life," "Strong," and "Half A Heart," I truly believe that everyone should check out Midnight Memories. This album has such a great feel to it, one that I will definitely be having on repeat for a very, very long time. One Direction, I truly commend you on such a great album!! Love you guys! :)

Here's the link to a full stream of the album in case you're curious:
